ADT strengthens its smart-home bid with a video doorbell
OREANDA-NEWS. July 15, 2016. ADT has announced a new partnership with Ring, the developer behind the Ring Video Doorbell. This isn't the security company's first foray into the smart-home market. ADT Pulse has already incorporated home automation technology like Nest's Learning Thermostat and has announced future integrations with companies like August and Roost. But the partnership with Ring is notable for another reason: you'll be able to secure your home with ADT Pulse through the Ring app.
When we tested the Ring Video Doorbell, we found its features promising. Ring has a 1080p camera built into it, so when someone rings the doorbell, you can check who it is. You can also use the two-way audio feature to talk with the person -- even if you're not home. With this new partnership, you'll also be able to toggle security features from the Ring iOS and Android app if, say, you see the person at the door is an unwanted guest or you aren't available to answer.
But Ring also has some performance problems like push notification latency and spotty video quality. It remains to be seen whether this new partnership will see any fixes in the near future.
Ring is available for inclusion in the ADT Pulse system for new customers at a rate of \\$229 (about ?170 or AU\\$300) for purchase and installation. New and current customers can also elect to purchase a Ring doorbell separately for self-install.
