OREANDA-NEWS  Russian forward Evgeni Malkin has set a 21st-century record for the number of points in the first 10 matches of the National Hockey League (NHL) season among players aged 39 and older. Player statistics are available on the league's website.

In the regular season match against the St. Louis Blues, which ended with a score of 6:3 in favor of Pittsburgh, Malkin scored a goal and made an assist, bringing his score to 16 points (3 goals and 13 assists) with 10 matches played.

Thus, Malkin became the first hockey player of the 21st century who managed to surpass Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin in this indicator. Ovechkin scored 13 points (6+7) in the opening 10 games of last season.

Malkin won the Stanley Cup three times with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ovechkin won the Stanley Cup once with the Capitals. Last season, the forward set a record for the number of goals in the regular NHL championships, surpassing the achievement of Canadian Wayne Gretzky.
