Estonian Prime Minister Stressed Importance of EURO for Baltic States
OREANDA-NEWS On 18 February was announced, that at the meeting held between Prime Minister Andrus Ansip and Vygaudas Usackas, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, who is on a visit to Estonia, the state of the world economy as well as energy and the plan to adopt the euro were discussed.
“We will achieve the best economic effect when all three of us adopt the euro,” said Prime Minister Ansip and stated that Estonia plans to take forceful steps to make the adoption of the euro possible at the beginning of 2011. According to the Prime Minister, foreign investors are looking for a sense of security and this can be offered by the adoption of the euro. “Then they will be ready to invest more in our country,” said the Prime Minister.
At the meeting, energy-related issues were also discussed in greater detail: the establishment of network connections between countries, the export and import of electricity, the status of the establishment of the new nuclear reactor power plant in Lithuania, and the need to establish a common Baltic and Nordic electricity market by the year 2013. According to the Prime Minister, the agreement made between the Baltic Prime Ministers last year on 21 November in Tartu to reach the establishment of the common energy market of the Nordic and Baltic countries by the year 2013, must be proceeded with promptly.
At the meeting, the economic situation in Estonia and Lithuania and in the world as a whole was also discussed. The Prime Minister said that the Estonian government will present the negative supplementary budget in the amount of BEEK 8 to the Riigikogu tomorrow.
Vygaudas Usackas, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, is on a one-day visit to Estonia and has met with the Speaker of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma, Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet, and Prime Minister Andrus Ansip. The Minister of Foreign Affairs will depart Estonia tonight.
