Klaipeda Port Considers Possibility to Create Exposition of Boulders
OREANDA-NEWS. July 28, 2010. The meeting designated to possibility to create exposition of boulders, that year by year had been removed from the sea bed while performing dredging works in port waters, was organized in a conference hall of Port Authority (Janonio 24). The goal of this discussion was to consider possible exposition sites and topical related issues. The meeting was chaired by director general Eugenijus Gentvilas, reported the press-centre of Klaipeda Port.
For years the Port Authority has been executing dredging works in port waters in Curonian Lagoon and entrance channel. During these works lots of boulders with diameter from 0,8 metres to 2 metres have been removed from the sea bed. Presently these boulders are numerated and stored on Smiltyne Coast.
Removed boulders are not just plain stones of Lithuania. Due to thousands of years spent on the Port sea bed the boulders had not experienced atmosphere, flora or human activity impact. Part of the boulders might be affected by water. Therefore the boulders removed from the Lagoon bottom may carry a scientific – cognitive value, besides, they may be interesting in emotional – psychological aspect as well. They are not field boulders, but boulders witnessing the development and history of the Port.
These boulders are to be accessible to society in the form of exposition and should be exposed within the territory owned by Klaipeda Municipality. Klaipeda Port is geographically located namely in the town, therefore transportation of the boulders to other municipality should be a harm to Klaipeda town.
Port Authority is planning to present these boulders to the future exposition irrespective of the fact that several million litas had been already paid for removal works. Presently the most relevant issue is to find the most proper and accessible to people plot covering several hectares suitable for establishment of exposition of boulders – The Park of Boulders.
