OREANDA-NEWS. August 09, 2012. According to Valentin Gapanovich, Senior Vice-President of Russian Railways, next year the Company plans to launch a joint project with Finland to begin piggyback shipments (transport cars and freight by rail) between Helsinki and St. Petersburg, reported the press-centre of RZD.

In the first instance, it is necessary to create a structure which will ensure the activities of the operator when organising piggyback shipments. This question should be solved out at the legislative level. Organising the piggyback project is important both in economic and environmental terms. This includes relieving the Scandinavia motorway by reducing the number of heavy-duty lorries at the border crossings and reducing the impact of road transport on the environment.

The project will benefit all participants involved in the transportation process.

At the moment, work is continuing on resolving issues regarding tariff regulation in organising this type of shipment.
