OREANDA-NEWS. April 15, 2013. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Ulan-Ude, the Republic of Buryatia, on Thursday to attend a State Council meeting on improving the efficiency of the Russian forest based industries, the Russian Presidential Press Office reported.

Russia’s forestry policy, rational use of its forestry resources, conservation and rehabilitation of forests, developing forestry industry and forest management, combating illegal timber trade, countering violations of the environment laws will be discussed at the meeting.

Ahead of the meeting, Putin will visit a number of enterprises engaged in timber harvesting and wood conversion in the region.

Russia has 20% of the world’s forests, but the country’s share in the world trade of forest industry products is only 4%. In 2012 the forest industry's share in GDP of Russia was 1,19%.
