OREANDA-NEWS. Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced that a new all-time record for passenger traffic with a total of 47.2 million passengers traveling through the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was set in 2014.

"As one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States, SFO has set a new all-time record for passenger traffic, solidifying San Francisco's status as a world class destination for business travelers and visitors," said Mayor Lee. "As a gateway that connects our diverse City to the rest of the world, SFO is a powerful economic engine for our City and the region, providing a choice for passengers and bringing success to our City and our residents."

"We appreciate the record number of travelers who made SFO their airport of choice in 2014," said SFO Director John L. Martin. "We continue to elevate the airport experience for our guests, with new airlines, new destinations, and exciting amenities."

Passenger Traffic

A total of 47.2 million passengers traveled through SFO in 2014. This figure represents a 4.8 percent increase over the previous record year, set in 2013, and is the third consecutive year of record traffic levels at SFO.

Economic Impact

SFO also released updated statistics on the economic impact in the region. For Fiscal Year 2013-2014, the Airport generated almost 36,400 jobs and USD 6.3 billion in business activity. OffЃ]site business activities that depend directly on local air service for staff movements, cargo deliveries, or visitor spending together raise the direct airport economic contribution to the Bay Area to USD 35.4 billion in business sales with approximately 155,800 jobs. Operations at SFO also generated USD 2.5 billion state and local tax revenues during FY 2013-2014.

Market share

SFO offers a wide variety of travel options to passengers, with 32 international carriers serving 39 international cities, as well as 15 domestic airlines offering nonstop service to 76 cities in the U.S.

SFO made important progress in a variety of objectives over the past year, with highlights including:

January - opening of renovated Terminal 3, Boarding Area E on schedule and under budget

July - SFO unveils prototype mobile app to assist visually impaired passengers

August - completion of Runway Safety Area construction, one month ahead of schedule

Outlook for 2015

The Airport expects growth to continue in 2015, led primarily by increases in international traffic. In April 2015, SFO will welcome Turkish Airlines' nonstop service to Istanbul. In addition, several airlines plan to increase service during peak summer travel months, through additional flights or the use of larger aircraft, including the Airbus A380.
