Bosch realises large-scale solar thermal system in Bangalore
About one third of the hotel roof is now covered by rack-mounted collectors. The solar heat is stored in a 6,000 litre buffer tank, which supplies the hot water to the 215 hotel rooms, the restaurant kitchens and the in-house laundry as needed. Before the system was taken into operation, water was heated by a diesel generator, which consumed about 17,000 litres of fuel per year. The phasing out of public fuel subsidies and the deregulation of the Indian diesel market made this form of hot water generation especially uneconomical.
The solar thermal system from Bosch was taken into operation in December 2014 and has since covered about half of the hotel’s hot water requirements – also at peak load times. In the first six months of operation, some 4,700 litres of diesel and, consequently, 15 tons of carbon were saved – which adds up to about 30 tons for a full year.
Bosch partners use the system for information and training purposes
The new solar thermal system from Bosch is great benefit not only in environmental and economic terms. It also benefits Bosch’s partners such as engineers, planners, architects and, most importantly, local installers, who may regularly use the system for training purposes and information events. This underlines the importance of the growing Indian market for renewable energy, while at the same time providing the knowledge and expertise required for the installation and operation of solar thermal systems.
