OREANDA-NEWS Kaliningrad Avtotor has launched production of BAIC BJ60 frame SUVs, the company's press service reported.
"The BJ60 has become the sixth BAIC model and the second off-road model of the brand to be produced in Kaliningrad," the press release says.
The first BJ60 cars produced for the Russian market will be equipped with a 2-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 163 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm, which is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The power plant of the SUV is implemented using the "soft hybrid" technology (MHEV1): the traditional internal combustion engine is complemented by a 10 kW electric motor, which acts as a starter to facilitate engine operation.
The SUV has a length of 5,040 mm, a width of 1,955 mm and a height of 1,925 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.
"The launch of production of the BJ60 model took place in accordance with the deadlines stipulated by the general agreement on cooperation between Avtotor and BAIC International, which includes a phased expansion and updating of the product range, as well as the implementation of a localization program for automotive components," the press service notes.
BAIC is the leading brand of the eponymous group of companies (Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. - "Beijing Automobile Company"). The company was established in 1958 and is now one of the top 5 largest automakers in China.
In 2023, BAIC entered the Russian market. So far, the brand's line in Russia has included five models: the BAIC U5 Plus sedan, the BAIC X35 compact crossover, the BAIC X55 and BAIC X75 midsize crossovers, and the BAIC BJ40 frame SUV.
Avtotor has been producing cars since 1997. Up to and including 2022, the company produced German BMW models, as well as South Korean Kia and Hyundai (all production was discontinued in 2022). The group is currently assembling passenger and commercial vehicles of Chinese brands - Kaiyi, BAIC, SWM, Foton, Dongfeng Sokon, JMC and Jetour. In 2024, Avtotor planned to assemble 80-100 thousand cars.
