OREANDA-NEWS  Portuguese authorities intercepted a drug mafia submarine in the North Atlantic with a cargo of cocaine weighing almost nine tons. This is reported by the Daily Mail.

The submarine was caught more than 400 kilometers from the Azores Islands, an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean belonging to Portugal. It was heading to Europe from Latin America. The cost of the cargo is estimated at about 520 million pounds (54 billion rubles).

According to a Portuguese police official, this is the largest cocaine seizure in the country's history. The Portuguese Navy and Air Force participated in the operation, as well as representatives of the special services of the United Kingdom and the United States. The detention took place in difficult weather conditions.
