OREANDA-NEWS An "iceberg" was spotted in the Black Sea. A drifting accumulation of ice was discovered near the Bakal Spit in the north-west of the Crimean Peninsula, TASS reports with reference to the press service of the joint directorate of specially protected natural territories "Reserved Crimea".
Satellite images show an ice field with a length of more than seven kilometers, which is pressed against the Bakal spit. Sergey Kryukov, Deputy Director for Science of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Zapovedny Krym", called this a rare phenomenon.
At the same time, the scientist stressed that such an accumulation of ice cannot be considered a classic iceberg — it did not break off from the glacier, but formed directly into the sea.
The organization explained that the Karkinit Bay is shallow and extends deep into the land. In fact, it acts as a kind of natural refrigerator. During prolonged frosts, the water temperature in shallow water can reach negative values, so ice forms. Then the winds of the northern points "rake" the ice floes and sludge into large arrays, pressing them to the coast, forming ice fields, experts said.
Earlier, a 300-meter "icicle" was found in St. Petersburg. The 326-meter-high TV tower was completely frozen.
