OREANDA-NEWS  In 2023, European banks paid about 800 million euros in taxes in Russia, which is four times more than before the start of the SVO in Ukraine. The Financial Times writes about the unexpected source of income to the Russian budget of almost a billion euros.

We are talking about Raiffeisen Bank International, Unicredit, ING, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo and OTP. At the same time, the Russian daughter Raiffeisen paid most of the amount.

In 2021, Western banks paid about 200 million euros in taxes. The sharp increase in the amount in 2023 is due to the increased incomes of credit institutions. The sanctions have left Russian banks without access to Western sources of borrowing, which has made European banks even more popular with Russian residents.

Last year, Ukraine included the Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) group in the list of "sponsors of the war", as the Austrians continue to work in Russia. However, after consultations with the EU, the bank was excluded from the register.
