OREANDA-NEWS Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economy, Finance, Industrial and Digital Sovereignty of France, said that the European Union does not have a legal basis for the confiscation of all Russian assets frozen in European countries. His words on the sidelines of the meeting of finance ministers of the Group of Twenty (G20) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Le Figaro reports.

According to Le Maire, there is nothing more disastrous for Western countries than non-compliance with international rules, since this will risk deepening the split in the world community and Europe will be accused of double standards.

Prior to that, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that some Western countries were preventing the confiscation of assets of the Central Bank of Russia.

On February 25, US President Joe Biden raised the issue of using Russian assets at the G7 summit.

On February 19, the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, said that very soon the European Union (EU) will be able to legalize the use of profits from blocked Russian assets to support Ukraine. According to her, legal steps are already being taken within the framework of this initiative.

Earlier it became known that Ukraine plans to sell Russian assets under sanctions.
