Russians were warned about unexpected reasons for blocking bank transfers

OREANDA-NEWS Starting from March 1, 2027, bank transfers in Russia may be blocked if they are carried out from devices with an outdated version of the operating system, modified and unofficial firmware, Artem Gerasimov, head of information security at Sitronics Group, told RIA Novosti.
Anatoly Aksakov, head of the State Duma's financial market committee, earlier informed the agency about the expansion of relevant criteria, including malicious software. RIA Novosti asked the expert if this also applies to older versions of the software.
"Yes, since outdated versions of operating systems often contain known uncorrected vulnerabilities that are actively exploited by intruders," Gerasimov replied.
He added that blocking can also occur due to modified firmware or unofficial builds of gadget operating systems, as this increases the likelihood of hacking the device and can be regarded as a risk factor.
At the same time, the agency's interlocutor stressed that banks do not have full access to customers' smartphones and cannot scan their contents arbitrarily, but the built-in protection mechanisms of the mobile banking application are able to detect indirect signs of device compromise.
"Having root rights or jailbreak, running an application in an emulator, connecting remote controls, known malicious processes, intercepting the screen, overlaying windows, interfering with the application's memory or using analysis tools," Gerasimov listed.
To prepare for future changes and reduce the risk of blocking bank transfers, the expert advised using official versions of banking applications, updating the operating system and biometric protection of the device.
