OREANDA-NEWS The European Union budget will have to pay about 3 billion euros in interest on a new loan for Ukraine totaling 90 billion euros in the coming years, as EU countries have not made a political decision to use frozen Russian assets to finance Kiev, European Commissioner for Economics Valdis Dombrovskis said.
"Due to the fact that this political decision has not been taken, the EU will pay about 3 billion euros in interest from the EU budget in the coming years. This is the price of not making such a decision," Dombrovskis said, speaking at a conference in Poland.
According to him, initially the European Commission offered to finance assistance to Ukraine from income and cash balances generated from frozen Russian assets, without resorting to their confiscation. Belgium blocked this decision last December.
