OREANDA-NEWS. An Armenian soldier died from a gunshot wound on the border with Azerbaijan.

This was reported on July 27 by the press service of the Armenian Defense Ministry. “On July 27 at about 1:10, at one of the positions of a military unit located in the north-eastern direction of the Republic of Armenia, contract soldier Ashot G. Mikaelyan was mortally wounded by a sniper shot fired by the enemy,” the statement says. The agency expressed condolences to the colleagues and relatives of the soldier.

Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan worsened after military clashes between the troops of the two countries which began on the border on July 12. The opposing sides accuse each other of aggression.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held telephone talks with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, to urge them to deescalate the conflict.
