OREANDA-NEWS  The Supreme Court of Brazil refused to extradite Russian citizen Sergei Cherkasov to the United States. This is reported on the agency's website.

It is clarified that the court received two requests for the extradition of a Russian — from Russia and from the United States. Washington's appeal in Brazil was considered unfounded, since "the accused already has an extradition request approved by the Federal Supreme Court."

In March 2023, the US authorities charged Cherkasov with espionage in the interests of a foreign state, as well as fraud, including banking and visa. In Washington, he is considered an employee of Russian intelligence, attributed to attempts to act in the States "as an agent of a foreign power" under the name of Brazilian citizen Victor Muller Ferreira. The department also claimed that the Russian was trying to get a job at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. There he was allegedly refused and returned to Brazil. He was later arrested on fraud charges.
