By 2050, Russia intends to increase coal production to 660 million tons.

OREANDA-NEWS The program for the development of the Russian coal industry until 2050 assumes an increase in production to 660 million tons, and exports to 350 million tons, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said.
"The government has approved an updated program for the development of the coal industry for the period up to 2050... The target scenario provides for an increase in production to 660 million tons, and exports to 350 million tons," he said during an operational meeting between Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and deputy prime ministers.
According to Novak, the development program is synchronized with Russia's energy strategy, calculated according to four scenarios, depending on global demand for coal, taking into account the growth dynamics and forecast structure of the global gross domestic product, the energy intensity of the global economy.
The new investment cycle will become the basis for increasing coal production and export, the Deputy Prime Minister noted.
In particular, it is supposed to ensure technological sovereignty by forming an industry order for mining equipment, unmanned and unmanned mining technologies, and digital platforms. The tasks also include the development of promising fields and the creation of new production centers in the east of the country: in Yakutia, Tuva, Khakassia, Transbaikalia, Taimyr and Chukotka, Novak added.
In 2025, coal production in Russia decreased by 0.2%, to 429 million tons, according to Rosstat data. Coal exports increased by 7% last year to 211 million tons, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev said.
