OREANDA-NEWS A telecommunications cable between Sweden and Latvia was damaged in the Baltic Sea, the Finnish broadcasting portal Yle reported, citing the Latvian public broadcasting company LSM.
"The damaged cable runs between Ventspils and Gotland. The Latvian Navy has sent a patrol ship to investigate the vessel that could have been involved in the damage," the statement said.
The LVTRC operator who manages the cable believes that the damage was caused by an external influence.
It is noted that data transmission may now be slower than usual, but damage to the cable should not cause great inconvenience to consumers.
The damaged cable is located on the seabed at a depth of more than 50 meters. The nature of the damage will be known only after the start of repair work, said Vineta Sprugadain, Communications manager at VTRC.
