OREANDA-NEWS The state grain buyer of Egypt — the General Directorate for the Supply of Raw Materials (GASC) announced on Tuesday, August 8, the purchase of 235 thousand tons of Russian wheat as part of an international tender, Reuters reports.

The purchase will be received in parts. The first one will be 175 thousand tons for shipment from September 15 to September 30. The second is 60 thousand tons for shipment from October 1 to October 15.

According to Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko in June, Moscow and Cairo have worked out a system for delivering Russian wheat to the Arab Republic, which happens regardless of Western sanctions.

If in previous years Egypt traditionally bought about 6 million tons of wheat per year in Russia, then this agricultural year the figure "may significantly exceed 8 million tons," TASS reminds.

In July, the adviser to the Egyptian Minister of Supply and Internal Trade of the country, Nuamani Nasr Nuamani, said that Egypt need not fear the non-extension of the grain deal, since the consequences of this will not affect the country. Egypt is diversifying sources of wheat imports and increasing its own reserves.

A year ago, in June 2022, Egypt purchased 175 thousand tons of Russian wheat at a tender held by the state Agency for Food Procurement. This was the first tender involving the supply of wheat in the new season. Its price was $480 per ton.
