Giant papaya grown in Russia

OREANDA-NEWS The first large papaya weighing just over one kilogram was grown in an experimental greenhouse in Sochi. This was announced by the head of the farm "100 hectares " Andrey Platonov, quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to the source, papaya seedlings were planted in the Sochi greenhouse in August 2025, and the first harvest, which was a fruit weighing about 500-600 grams, was harvested in February 2026.
"This is a Dutch variety, it's a classic papaya, so to speak, with orange flesh and black seeds inside," the specialist said, adding that they tasted the giant papaya "right in the greenhouse."
"People from different regions of Russia are ready to buy papaya from us, they write to us on social networks," the farmer shared. He noted that in just one year of continuous flowering, up to 100 kilograms of papaya can be harvested from one tree.
Earlier, Andrey Platonov also talked about the cultivation of various types of bananas in his experimental greenhouses. "The international banana collection was brought to Sochi from India, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Turkey, Cameroon and Ecuador. Bananas have different skin colors — blue, red, black and yellow," Platonov was quoted as saying by Interfax.
