OREANDA-NEWS The decision to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia was not easy, but it ensured peace in the Caucasus, Deputy Head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting with the heads of the republics Aslan Bzhania and Alan Gagloev.

According to him, since then relations between the Russian Federation and the two republics have been developing successfully. "We have allied relations, very good and, of course, this development will definitely continue," the deputy head of the Security Council assured.

Addressing his counterparts, the Russian politician congratulated the residents of the republics on gaining independence, with the fact that new subjects of international law appeared at that time. He also wished the peoples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia prosperity and success.

"I congratulate you on the upcoming important dates," Medvedev concluded.

For his part, the President of Abkhazia expressed gratitude to the people of Russia and personally to Medvedev for making a huge contribution to the development of the Abkhazian statehood. According to him, the recognition of Abkhazia's independence has ensured lasting peace.
