More than a thousand new varieties of watermelons have been sown in the Astrakhan region

OREANDA-NEWS More than a thousand experimental watermelon varieties were sown at the large breeding and seed enterprise "Master Seed" in the Astrakhan region this year, how many of them will enter wide circulation will be known after their maturation and careful examination, the head of the enterprise Artem Sokolov told RIA Novosti.
"This year, we have sown 1,017 new varieties of watermelon. They all differ in shape, color on the outside, color of the pulp, ripening time, consistency of the pulp and other indicators," he said.
The interlocutor clarified that how many of them will be widely used will be clear later, after their maturation and careful examination and selection. For example, it took 25 years to produce a yellow watermelon, which can now be seen on almost all the shelves of the country, Sokolov noted.
In total, according to his information, about 1.5 thousand varieties of watermelons are listed in the state breeding register of Russia. Of these, only about 30 varieties are grown in commercial volumes. At the same time, 8 out of 30 of these varieties were bred at the Astrakhan enterprise.
The sown area for experiments in the Astrakhan region is more than 27 hectares. On them, the Master Seed enterprise is engaged in the breeding and production of melon seeds. In particular, the company produced the world's first watermelon varieties with bright yellow and white flesh.
