OREANDA-NEWS  The implementation of the IAEA initiative to create a safety zone around the Zaporozhye NPP actually depends on Kiev, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, told RIA Novosti in an interview.

As the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation stated, the implementation of the IAEA initiative to create a safety zone around the Zaporozhye NPP "actually" depends on Kiev. "Well, also from the Americans, who it's high time to advise their friends in Kiev to take a more responsible approach," Ulyanov added. At the same time, according to him, he is not sure that the United States will influence the situation.

"Washington is very carefully adjusting to the position of Kiev and does not want to create a situation where the Ukrainian authorities would be under the slightest pressure from the international community, even if it would seem that we are talking about obvious things," the agency interlocutor explained.

The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation also added that if the Ukrainians suddenly confirm tonight that they will not shoot at the station anymore, then after an additional "reconciliation of the clock" with Moscow and Kiev, Grossi will have grounds to announce that nuclear and physical nuclear safety at the NPP is under protection. "Naturally, the agency will need to carefully monitor compliance with the protection regime," Ulyanov said.
Zaporizhia NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River near the town of Energodar. This is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity – the station has six power units with a capacity of 1 gigawatt. Since March last year, she has been under the protection of the Russian military. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that this step is justified in order to avoid preventing leaks of nuclear and radioactive materials.
