OREANDA-NEWS The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted to attack civilian infrastructure in the St. Petersburg region on Thursday, and six Ukrainian drones were in the airspace of Latvia, with five of them disappearing from radar in the east of the country.

"On May 7, 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted a terrorist attack on civilian infrastructure in the St. Petersburg region. At about 03:20 Moscow time, a group of six UAVs was detected in the airspace of the Republic of Latvia by the radio-technical reconnaissance systems of the 6th Guards Army of the Russian Aerospace Forces," the military department said.

They also reported that two French Rafale fighter jets and two F-16 fighter jets were detected in the air over Latvia by Russian airspace control systems.

"At around 04:00 a.m., the positions of five of the six detected UAVs disappeared near the city of Rēzekne in eastern Latvia. "The sixth UAV was shot down by Russian air defense systems near the village of Likhachyovo (78 km southeast of Pskov) after entering Russian airspace at 4:41 a.m. Moscow time," the Russian military said.
"As a result of the examination of the fallen debris, the air target that attacked from Latvian airspace was identified as a Ukrainian-made An-196 Lyuty UAV," the Russian Defense Ministry said.
