OREANDA-NEWS  The European Union is not in the mood for constructive climate negotiations and blames Russia even for weather changes, Sergei Kononuchenko, special representative of the Russian Foreign Minister for climate issues, told RIA Novosti.

"Currently, it is customary in the European Union to blame Russia for all sins. The EU believes that Russians are to blame for political instability, socio-economic problems and weather fluctuations," Kononuchenko said.

At the same time, the common climate threat has not yet brought Western delegations closer to the Russian one at the negotiating table, the diplomat stated.

This summer, Europe experienced one of the most intense heat waves in recent years. The situation was particularly difficult in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece, where extreme heat was accompanied by drought and increased fire danger.

Damage from forest fires and heat waves in European countries in 2026 exceeded three billion euros, the Financial Times newspaper estimated. According to her, in the first two months of the fire season alone, almost 0.5 million hectares burned down on the continent.
