OREANDA-NEWS  The incidence of whooping cough in the Sverdlovsk region increased 3.6 times compared to the indicators of the "pre-crisis" period, the press service of the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor reported.

"An increase in the incidence of whooping cough is registered in the Sverdlovsk region. The incidence rate for 10 months of 2023 reached 26.6 per 100,000 population, which is 3.6 times higher than the incidence rate of SMU (the average long–term level - ed.) of the pre-crisis period (2015-2019)",

As the Sverdlovsk sanitarians explain, the rise in morbidity is explained by several reasons. This is the cyclical nature of the epidemic process – every 3-4 years there is an increase in the number of cases, as well as the lifting of restrictive measures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021.

"The active detection of cases is also facilitated by the high alertness of medical workers, the wide availability of the PCR method and laboratory examination of all contact persons. The main measure for the prevention of whooping cough is immunization," the department stressed.

At the end of November, the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation reported that pertussis vaccination drugs are available in all regions of the country, their residues amount to more than 3.7 million doses, since the beginning of the year, the introduction into civil circulation amounted to almost 5 million doses.
