OREANDA-NEWS  About two thousand migrants were detained in the center of St. Petersburg on New Year's Eve. This was reported in the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the region.

"As a result of the inspection, numerous violations of migration legislation were revealed, for which administrative measures were taken," the report says.

The ministry added that the detentions of migrants were only part of preventive measures to ensure the safety of residents and guests of the city.

Earlier, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) Irina Volk said that New Year's Eve passed in Russia without incident. According to her, the police provided security and public order on New Year's Eve. More than 1.6 million people took part in the events. 66 thousand law enforcement officers were on duty.
