OREANDA-NEWS The Russian branch of Greenpeace will close due to the recognition of the international foundation Greenpeace International as an undesirable organization in the Russian Federation, its press service reported.

"This decision makes it illegal to continue any Greenpeace activity in Russia. Therefore, the Russian branch of Greenpeace is forced to close," the Russian branch of Greenpeace said in a statement.

The Russian branch of Greenpeace expressed disagreement with the decision of the Prosecutor General's Office and recalled the 30-year nature protection work of the organization: popularization of separate collection and recycling of garbage, assistance in placing Russian natural objects under UNESCO protection, participation in the creation of new and protection of existing national parks and reserves, as well as combating pollution of Lake Baikal.

"To say that the Russian Greenpeace is acting against the interests of Russia means not knowing at all what the organization has been doing for 30 years," the report says.

Earlier on Friday, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation recognized the activities of the Greenpeace International Foundation in Russia as undesirable.
