OREANDA-NEWS The Studenaya River in Kamchatka changed its course after the eruption of the Klyuchevsky volcano and now threatens the local highway. This was announced by the head of the Ust-Kamchatsky municipal district Oleg Bondarenko in his Telegram channel.

According to the head of the district, the channel of the reservoir has returned to the natural direction and negatively affects the section of the regional highway between the villages of Kozyrevsk and Klyuchi. The changes were also confirmed by the leading hydrologist of the Kamchatka Hydrometeocenter.

"There is a lot of water coming. The leading hydrologist expressed serious concerns that its accumulation is taking place at the foot of the highway, and there is a high probability of a breakthrough, the release of large masses of water onto the highway. He also added that it is necessary to come up with a structure to protect the road," Bondarenko said.

He clarified that a district-scale emergency zone was expanded to the territory, which operates in the Ust-Kamchatsky district due to a volcanic eruption. The authorities have already started preparing a site for basing special equipment, but there is less and less time to prevent a natural disaster against the background of precipitation and cooling.

Klyuchevskoy volcano began erupting in June 2023, activity intensified in mid-October. On November 1, the eruption of the volcano reached its climax — it threw out a series of ash columns up to 14 kilometers above sea level. Earlier, due to the eruption of the Klyuchevskoy and Bezymyanny volcanoes, part of the Milkovo — Klyuchi — Ust-Kamchatsk highway was blocked.
