OREANDA-NEWS Street artist Banksy has confirmed that he is the author of a large statue that appeared on Wednesday in Waterloo Place in central London. The video he posted shows how workers install the sculpture at night.
The monument depicts a man in a suit descending from a pedestal, while the figure's face is covered with a flag. The base of the statue bears the signature of Banksy.
According to media reports, since its appearance in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the facility has attracted a large number of passers-by and tourists. The sculpture is set among monuments to British historical figures, including King Edward VII and Captain Robert Scott.
In a video posted by the artist, an elderly man approaches the statue and says, "I don't like this." At the same time, many social media users positively assessed the work. One commentator called it a "convincing statement about collective blindness," while another noted that the flag "does not carry an identity, but remains recognizable."
According to CNN, by the middle of Thursday afternoon, the city authorities had installed fences around the monument. Westminster City Council told the BBC it was pleased to see Banksy's new work and that the statue "will remain accessible to the public" despite the protective measures taken.
