OREANDA-NEWS. The South Korean web series "The Squid Game" has become the most watched series in the history of Netflix, it was watched by 111 million users of the platform. This is reported on the company's Twitter.

"The number of fans of the Squid Game has officially reached 111 million — this is the largest launch of the series in our history," Netflix said.

The message is accompanied by a video clip in which the voice-over thanks the fans of the series. "111 million of you joined the VIP ranks and made the "Squid Game" the No. 1 show in the world," the entry says.

As CNN clarifies, the calculations were based on the Netflix account metric, which takes into account users who watched the series for at least two minutes.

The survival series has been ranked first in the Netflix top for more than two weeks in more than 80 countries around the world, including Russia. This is evidenced by the data of the aggregator FlixPatrol, which collects information about online cinemas and video streaming services.

Despite this, the rating of the "Squid Game" is decreasing. If on October 9 it was 826 points, then on October 12 the series is estimated at 821 points.

The Korean survival web series "Squid Game" was released on September 17. It was directed and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk, who also directed the drama "Fortress". The nine-hour episodes tell the story of a group of people who decide to participate in a secret game because of financial problems. The winner will receive 45.6 billion won (approximately $38.5 million).

The format of the game involves the collision of many characters in a limited area. They overcome the challenges until there is only one person left in the game. The rest of the participants who failed to complete the tasks or violated the rules are killed by the organizers.

The director called the series "an allegory of modern capitalist society, depicting competition in an extreme form." The budget of the series was $17 million, it began to be developed in early September 2019.
