OREANDA-NEWS  Russian films in January 2024 can collect as much as domestic films earned at the box office for the whole of 2016, which was then declared the Year of Cinema in the country. This forecast was made by the Cinema Foundation, based on data from the Unified Federal Automated Information System for Information about Film Screenings in Cinemas (EAIS), which it operates, during the New Year holidays.

Earlier it became known that in the period from January 1 to January 8, the Russian box office amounted to a record 5.8 billion rubles. At the same time, domestic films, according to the Cinema Foundation, accounted for 95.4% of the total box office - a record 5.5 billion rubles. The leader of the New Year's film distribution was the comedy "Serf-2", which earned more than 2.6 billion rubles.

"During the New Year holidays in 2024, the box office set a new record in the modern history of the Russian film distribution: the total box office for eight holidays amounted to 5.8 billion rubles. Russian cinemas have never achieved large box office receipts over the New Year holidays. Taking into account these results for January 2024, Russian films will collect the same amount as for the whole of 2016 (8.6 billion rubles in calendar 2016)," the message posted on the EAIS website says.

As noted in the Cinema Fund, the volume of film distribution in monetary terms, amounting to 5.8 billion rubles in the first eight days of 2024, exceeded the total box office receipts of the New Year periods of previous years, exceeding the maximum figures of the New Year holidays of 2023. Then the film distribution market earned 4.5 billion rubles. "Compared to the New Year holidays in 2023, box office receipts increased by 29.6%, and the number of tickets sold increased by 10.5%," the report says.
