OREANDA-NEWS. November 27, 2009. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has thanked the International Telecommunications Union for choosing Belarus as the country to host the regional preparatory assembly for the CIS states for the 2010 World Telecommunication Development Conference.

Alexander Lukashenko met with Hamadoun Toure, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union, on 26 November. At the meeting the Belarus President said: “I would like to thank you for the ITU’s trust in Belarus. We promised to make proper arrangements for the forum. I see it in your eyes that Belarus has not failed the International Telecommunications Union”.

In turn, Hamadoun Toure said: “Last year we dreamed of this meeting. I am glad the dream has come true”. According to the Secretary General, thanks to efforts of the Belarusian government leaders of CIS states have been attracted to ITU events in Minsk. It will foster the development of international cooperation in the area of telecommunications. The Secretary General praised the progress Belarus has secured in the area of telecommunications.

“Such events allow many countries to share their experience,” added Hamadoun Toure. “Apart from that, we have invited private business representatives and hope they will show interest in making investments into the telecommunications industry”.

These international events are held in the National Library of Belarus. Hamadoun Toure believes that such premises are unparalleled in Europe.

BelTA reported earlier that the regional preparatory assembly for the CIS states for the 2010 World Telecommunication Development Conference is held in Minsk on 23-27 November as well as the Connect the CIS Space summit, the 41st session of the Council of communication administration heads of the CIS regional telecommunication community. Presidents of several CIS states took part in the summit on 26 November.
