OREANDA-NEWS. September 26, 2017. Launched today, SAP Data Hub provides a simpler, more scalable approach to data landscape management, makes it easier to combine Big Data and enterprise data, and enables better data governance.

As a result, companies will be able to use data — the new ‘oil’ of business — to innovate faster and compete more effectively with their rivals.

“Companies are struggling to work across multiple types and volumes of information that are kept in a variety of locations across the enterprise,” said Bernd Leukert, member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, Products and Innovation. “SAP Data Hub simplifies the data landscape, making it manageable and scalable while providing the governance that companies need. It also makes it easier to build applications that extract value from data across the organization, no matter if it lies in the cloud or on premise, in the data lake or the enterprise data warehouse, or in an SAP or non-SAP system.”

SAP Data Hub was officially launched by SAP CEO Bill McDermott at the company’s New York offices and timed to coincide with the Strata Data Conference, one of the largest Big Data conferences in the world, as well as the SAP TechEd conference in Las Vegas. McDermott noted that while companies recognize the value and potential of data to change their businesses, the explosion of data has led to the proliferation of systems. “It’s actually harder and harder to get value from the data as systems grow,” he said. “It’s a major pain point that we see across all industries.”

The problem of data complexity was also highlighted in a new global survey published today by SAP. In the survey, three out of every four IT decision-makers said their data landscape is so complex that it limits agility and 86 percent acknowledge that, with the right tools, there is much more they could do with their data (see the infographic).

Enterprise data landscapes have grown increasingly complex, with proliferating data sources and destinations, such as data lakes, enterprise data warehouses (EDWs), data marts, cloud applications, cloud storage, business intelligence, and data visualization tools.

The difficulty of overcoming data silos and combining (Hadoop-based) Big Data with data generated by enterprise systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems and by partners prevents businesses from being agile and capitalizing on the full value of data.

“SAP Data Hub provides an answer to the question: ‘How do I connect Big Data to my enterprise data landscape?’,” says Barbara Lewis, vice president of Marketing for SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services. Companies now expect data management tools that support all types of data, including structured and unstructured data, and that enable them to extract real value from that data using powerful data processing pipelines.

SAP Data Hub provides three key benefits. First, it strengthens data governance by giving IT departments and data administrators a single view of the data landscape, providing access controls, enabling them to easily trace how data has been used and by whom, and providing them with an understanding of the impact of future changes.
