OREANDA-NEWS. The heads of the ecological departments of the Russian NPPs meet every year in to discuss their problems and plans, reported the press-centre of  Rosenergoatom. The deputy technical director of Rosenergoatom Vyacheslav Kruchkov says that such meetings have proved their usefulness. “As you may know, nuclear power engineering is one of the ecologically cleanest ways to produce electricity. We fully control our emissions into water and air and seek to reduce to the minimum their negative impacts on the environment,” says Kruchkov.

The conferees discussed the results of their ecological activities in 2006 and outlined plans for 2007-2008. The head of the Radiation Safety, Ecology and Nuclear Materials Control Department of Rosenergoatom Boris Bezrukov pointed out that, now that Russia is implementing a large-scale program for nuclear energy development, Rosenergoatom has begun to pay special attention to ecological safety. All the Russian NPPs have efficient radiation safety systems. As a result, their radiation effects on the environment make up just few percents of the admissible levels. That’s why the ecological services are presently focused on non-radiation effects and rational nature management problems. The head of the Environment Protection Department of the Central Office of Rosenergoatom Tatiana Palitskaya and the heads of the ecological services of the NPPs reported on their work in 2006. Just like before, last year the Russian NPPs were ecologically safe and efficient and registered no ecology-related incidents and accidents. Particularly, they carried out all planned measures for modernizing their sewage treatment works. The key tasks for 2007-2008 are reduction of harmful emissions, improvement of ecological control, perfection of environment protection methodology, formation of an efficient ecological management system complying with ISO 14001. In the end the conferees passed recommendations and decisions.
