OREANDA-NEWS. July 31, 2009. The gas companies of Lithuania and Latvia Lietuvos Dujos AB and Latvijas Gaze A/S submitted a joint application to the European Commission’s (EC) Directorate-General for Energy and Transport seeking financial assistance for a joint project according to the Baltic Interconnection Plan of the EC European Energy Programme for Recovery. The deadline for the submission of the applications to the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport expires on 15 July, reported the press-centre of Lietuvos Dujos AB.

The joint project of the natural gas companies Lietuvos Dujos AB and Latvijas Gaze A/S is aimed at enhancing the capacity of the natural gas interconnection between the two states, at upgrading the integration of the natural gas systems of the Baltic states, at creating conditions for the formation of the natural gas market of the Baltic states and for the preparation for the integration into the common natural gas market of the European Union. At the same time, the project implementation would enhance the natural gas supplies security in case of any possible cutoffs, interruptions or limitations of gas supplies and would promote the development of the internal gas markets of the Baltic states. Total project value is EUR 32.8 million, the project works would be carried out in the territories of both Latvia and Lithuania. The planned EU financial assistance would finance 50% of the project costs, and the remaining 50% of the project costs are planned to be financed with own resources of Lietuvos Dujos AB and Latvijas Gaze A/S.

Back in 2005, at the Lithuanian-Latvian state border, Lietuvos Dujos AB constructed a reciprocating natural gas metering station. As a rule, all natural gas volumes are supplied to Lithuania via the territory of Belarus, nevertheless, in cases of major repairs, accidents, emergencies or other extreme situations Lithuania can also receive gas from the underground natural gas storage facility located in Latvia. The construction of the gas metering station was financed with own resources of Lietuvos Dujos AB, and the project costs amounted to LTL 10 million.
