OREANDA-NEWS. January 6, 2010. According to the poll 47 per cent of the population of Estonia support the adoption of the Euro. 41 per cent of the people are opposed to the single European currency.

The proponents of the Euro said, when justifying their position, that it is easier to travel with the Euro, purchase goods, settle accounts, etc. It was also found that a single monetary system and single currency are useful and rational. The proponents of the single currency also said that the Euro provides a sense of security and provides a chance for the development of the Estonian economy.

The main argument for opposing the Euro is fear of a decrease in the standard of living and an increase in prices (30 per cent of the opponents).

Compared to the previous poll, the general rate of support has decreased somewhat (in December 2008, the Euro was supported by 50 per cent of the population) and this due to the fact that the attitudes of non-Estonians have become remarkably more critical during the year (from 36 support per cent to 23 per cent). During this period, support among Estonians has increased from 56 per cent to 59 per cent.

As of November 2009, support for the membership of Estonia in the European Union remains at a stable high level: it is supported by 81 per cent of residents. Support has remained at more or less the same level (more than 80 per cent) over the past three years.

The aim of the poll ordered by the State Chancellery and conducted at the end of last year was to measure the level of support for the adoption of the Euro and membership in the European Union. Also, respondents were asked to spontaneously give reasons for why they support or do not support the adoption of the single currency.
