The energy saving and emission reduction situation of "12th 5-year planning" is becoming more and more severe, but Baosteel Co., Ltd. walks more steadily on the road of emission reduction. According to the latest statistics, so far since 2008 the total SO2 emission of Baosteel Co., Ltd. has been cut down by over 50% accumulatively. It is a remarkable achievement made by Baosteel Co., Ltd. in its efforts of actively fulfilling its social responsibility as a listed company, exerting itself to practice the concept of environmental management and further driving the work of energy saving and emission reduction, reported the press-centre of Baosteel.

SO2 is one of the main pollutants of the atmosphere, and the main composition that forms the acid rain. Due to the limits of production process, etc., the reduction of SO2 emission has always been the difficult problem of environmental protection that puzzles the steel enterprises. In recent years, Baosteel Co., Ltd. has always committed itself to the reduction of SO2 emission. Since taking the lead to install desulfurization device in No.2 generating set of Power Plant in 2004, it has successively carried out the construction of desulfurization system for the sintering machine. Since last year, despite the severe operation situation, Baosteel Co., Ltd. still put the addition of desulfurization devices into the top priority. So far, except that the desulfurization systems of Stainless Steel Business Unit No.3 sintering machine and Meishan Steel sintering machine are still under construction, all the generating sets and sintering machines within the scope of Baosteel Co., Ltd. have completed the construction of desulfurization system and maintained continuous operation.

The key of SO2 emission reduction is to ensure the operating efficiency of desulfurization device. To stabilize the desulfurization efficiency, in recent years, Baosteel Co., Ltd. sustains the promotion and improvements of desulfurization operation procedure of generating sets, strengthens the detection of process data of desulfurization system, such as adding the detection analysis of slurry in the absorbing column for timely adjustment, so as to ensure the high desulfurization efficiency. Through the in-depth research on sintering machine desulfurization technology, exploration of the effective operation modes of dry desulfurization and wet desulfurization under different working conditions, equipment defect elimination and process optimization, a set of scientific and rational operating data was probed basically, laying the foundation to ensure the operating efficiency of sintering machine desulfurization device.

Baosteel Co., Ltd. also drives the production sites to keep improving the operating efficiency of desulfurization devices by strengthening the management and control. Thanks to the effects of various managerial measures such as SO2 total emission control, basic account management for operation of desulfurization device and on-line monitoring system of flue gas desulfurization, the operating efficiency and desulfurization efficiency of each set of desulfurization devices increase steadily. Among other things, the operation ratio and desulfurization efficiency of the generating sets of Power Plant reach 95% and 90% respectively, the operation ratio and desulfurization efficiency of the sintering machine desulfurization devices in the directly affiliated plants and departments are also better than the domestic like units. The effective operation of desulfurization device drives SO2 emission reduction greatly, the SO2 emission of Baosteel Co., Ltd. in 2008 exceeded 30,000t, while in 2011 the emission is only 15,000t. Moreover, Baosteel Co., Ltd. received the reward for extra emission reduction from Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau due to its notable efforts in SO2 emission reduction.
