OREANDA-NEWS. March 02, 2012. Tata Power, India’s largest integrated private power utility, organised a two-day seminar on condition-based monitoring and maintenance (CBM) at Haldia, during February 24-25, 2012.

Aimed at spreading awareness on the importance and need for CBM in industries, the seminar was jointly organised with the core technology and diagnostic support team. More than 50 participants including senior executives from NTPC, SKF, FAG and Tata Steel were present at the seminar.

In a message to the participants, Anil Sardana, managing director, Tata Power, emphasised the need for shifting the orbit from preventive or predictive assessment to residual life assessment and finally to life extension as present-day science on maintenance stands for zero mortality philosophy of assets and life till perpetuity.

KK Panda, head, core technology and diagnostic support, said, “Maintenance philosophies are changing from the traditional model which involved regular scheduled overhauls and correction of problems to a more proactive approach which constantly analyses equipment health with use of technology and seeks shutdown only if there is a critical need. This would significantly help in improving overall availability and efficiency and would therefore reduce maintenance cost.”

Vijayant Ranjan, station head, Haldia power plant, said, “Initiatives like these provide us a common platform and help in standardising our predictive maintenance practices across all divisions of Tata Power. This in turn would not only reduce maintenance cost but also increase availability of assets and as a result increase generation and revenue.”
