Intelligent Transport System by CMC Wins Award for Excellence in IT
OREANDA-NEWS. December 26, 2012. The Intelligent Transport System (ITS), designed and implemented by CMC for Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) in Mysore, Karnataka, has won the Computer Society of India (CSI) award for Excellence in IT 2012, in the Transport — Air, Rail & Road - Products, Designs and Solutions category.
The award was presented at the 47th annual convention of CSI, held on December 1, 2012, at Science City, Kolkata, by Ajit Singh, union minister for civil aviation, Government of India.
Through this innovative system, KSRTC is addressing the critical issue of customer service through real-time dissemination of information about bus arrival times to its users. The information, obtained through satellite-based GPS is displayed via large LED displays at bus stops and sent through SMSes. This initiative helped KSRTC improve fleet management, routing and helped it save fuel.
The overall objective of this project is to make public transportation in the cities more efficient, comfortable and customer-friendly, so that citizens are weaned away from using personal vehicles, thus leading to improved traffic efficiency, reduced traffic congestion and fuel consumption, improved environmental quality, energy efficiency and improved economic productivity.
R Ramanan, MD and CEO, CMC, said, “Getting an IT excellence award from a highly respected and pioneering professional organisation such as CSI is a true honour and an achievement for all of us at CMC. We strongly believe that ITS is a project of national importance, which can be replicated to make public transport more commuter-friendly and efficient in all our cities which are undergoing urban renewal. Delivering innovative and world-class solutions for projects of national importance has been in the DNA of CMC, and this recognition will help us further strengthen our efforts in this direction.”
