OREANDA-NEWS. December 31, 2013. Students of the University of Tartu were the most successful at the national competition for student research work of 2013, accounting for 63% of the research works that were awarded monetary awards.

In addition to the awards for specific areas, the Doctoral thesis submitted to the competition by Maido Koivomae who was supervised by Mart Loog, senior research fellow on molecular biology, was awarded one of the first prizes.

Prizes were awarded in four categories at the national competition of student research work: life and environmental sciences, social sciences and culture, health studies and natural sciences and technology. The total of 86 works were awarded monetary awards or a letter or appreciation from the Minister of Education and Science at the competition, of which 31 monetary awards and 24 letters of appreciation were awarded to students of the University of Tartu.

In addition to the awards for specific areas, two first prizes in the amount of 3600 euros were awarded to the best works over all areas and levels.

“The results of the student research work competition show that the level of the research works of the students of the University of Tartu continues to be high and it must be appreciated that it has been acknowledged so widely on the national level,” Marco Kirm, Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Tartu praised the students and their supervisors. “The achievements of Mardo Koivomae at the competition are also worthy of highlighting as an example – parallel to the research work that won the first prize, he successfully supervised the Bachelor’s thesis of Mihkel Ort who also won the first prize.”
