Tele2 Doubles 2.1GHz Spectrum Holding in Estonia
OREANDA-NEWS. March 14, 2014. Tele2 AB has acquired a second 2100 MHz license from the operator Raadiovork OU, doubling its 3G mobile internet capacity in the Estonian market.
The acquisition was approved by the Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority, and makes Tele2 Estonia the largest holder of frequencies in the country for data and mobile use. The firm also has spectrum licenses at 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2600 MHz and even 450 MHz, 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz frequencies.
Tele2 Estonia has plans this year to swap out its current 2G and 3G networks and launch countrywide 4G services.
“I want to emphasize the importance of tech neutral licenses in both low and high bands to give us tools to provide best value services to our customers," Niklas Sonkin, Executive Vice President of Central Europe and Eurasia at Tele2, said in a press release.
"Our spectrum portfolio puts us in a very strong position for the future, as this new frequency can also be used for upgrading to next generation LTE-Advanced.”
Tele2 AB is a major European telecommunications operator with about 15 million customers in 10 countries, including Estonia. It serves as a fixed-line telephone operator, cable and digital television provider, mobile phone operator and Internet service provider. The company was launched in Sweden.
