Robert Smith will be retained by SSE's Executive Committee
OREANDA-NEWS. July 24, 2015. Under the previous ten transformational years, Lord Smith of Kelvin has been the chairman of SSE. Earlier today he chaired his final SSE Annual General Meeting before being succeeded by Richard Gillingwater CBE.
Robert Smith joined the Board of SSE plc as a non-Executive Director in 2003 and became non-Executive Chairman in 2005. In that time, SSE has added significantly to its asset base in electricity generation and energy networks, increased its number of energy supply customers and expanded to become a major energy provider in Ireland. This short video takes you through some of the other highlights from the previous decade.
At the end of 2014, Robert announced his intention to step down saying; “It’s a matter of good corporate governance. When you’ve been on a board for so long its time to move on and give someone else an opportunity.
“I joined the board in 2003 and became chairman in 2005 so leaving now means 10 years as chairman and that’s enough.”
Although he will no longer be a member of the Board, Robert will be retained by SSE's Executive Committee to provide advice and counsel on key business issues relating to Scotland.
