OREANDA-NEWS  The US authorities have managed to convince another buyer of Russian oil, Syria, to drastically reduce its purchases. This was reported by Reuters, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

The main condition for reducing purchases of Russian raw materials was the possibility of lifting sanctions that are painful for the Syrian economy. We are talking about the status of a State sponsor of terrorism. Syria has been on this list for the past few decades.

This status does not allow the Middle Eastern state to purchase military and dual-use products abroad. The restrictions also include a ban on the supply of high-tech goods, as well as the possibility of secondary sanctions against companies from third countries for trading with Syria.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump managed, under threat of sanctions, to convince India to limit purchases of Russian raw materials. The purpose of this tactic was to limit Russia's income from energy exports. In the case of Syria, Washington, acting in a similar way, also wants to limit Russia's political and economic influence in the region. As an alternative, American negotiators suggested that Damascus actively purchase raw materials from the United States.
