OREANDA-NEWS Gazprom Neft has confirmed the signing of an agreement of intent with the Hungarian MOL on the sale of a stake in the Serbian NIS (Oil Industry of Serbia) owned by a Russian company, the company told RIA Novosti.

Hungarian oil and gas company MOL announced on Monday that it had signed a preliminary agreement with Gazprom Neft to acquire its 56.15% stake in NIS. The completion of the transaction requires, among other things, the approval of OFAC (the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States) and government approvals in Serbia. The companies intend to sign a purchase and sale agreement by March 31, 2026.

The United States imposed sanctions against NIS on January 10, 2025. Since then, the company has repeatedly received from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) The United States has a temporary license to postpone sanctions. NIS announced the start of US sanctions in early October. At the same time, the JANAF pipeline operator announced the termination of cooperation with NIS and, accordingly, stopped transporting oil to the NIS refinery.

US sanctions against NIS were suspended until January 23, and on January 9, the company agreed to supply the first batch of oil for refining. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in early January that he expects the resumption of production of petroleum products at the NIS oil refinery in Pancevo on January 25-26.

The Oil Industry of Serbia is one of the largest vertically integrated energy companies in Southeastern Europe. It is engaged in the exploration, production and processing of oil and gas, and the sale of petroleum products. The company owns the Pancevo refinery near Belgrade and more than 400 filling stations. Gazprom Neft currently owns 44.8% of NIS shares, Serbia - 29.8%, Gazprom's subsidiary - 11.3%, and the rest - to small shareholders.
