OREANDA-NEWS  By the end of this year, the world will produce a record amount of coal — 9.2 billion tons. The corresponding forecast was prepared by analysts of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Their conclusions were quoted by Vedomosti.

It is noted that last year the production of this energy carrier also showed record values — 9.15 billion tons, 1.4 percent more than in 2023. The sources of this growth are mainly China, Indonesia and India, for which coal is one of the main sources of electricity generation. In 2024, China produced 4.7 billion tons, while India increased production by seven percent to 1.1 billion tons. Indonesia produced 836 million tons of coal, or eight percent more than in 2023.

Similar factors, according to the IEA, will ensure record numbers in 2025. At the same time, there will be a surplus of supply in the market, as both China and India increased production in response to the shortage in 2021.

Earlier it was reported that in the first six months of 2025, Russia has significantly increased coal exports to Egypt. The excess of the 2024 figures is estimated at 2.5 times.
