OREANDA-NEWS  Rosatom is starting to restore the open switchgear of the Zaporozhye thermal power plant to create a backup source of power supply to the Zaporozhye NPP. This was reported on Friday in the Telegram channel of Rosatom.

"Taking into account the huge importance of the reserve of energy supply for the nuclear safety of the Zaporozhye NPP, especially in winter, we decided, despite the immediate threat to the lives of the personnel employed in these works, to proceed with the restoration of the open switchgear of the Zaporozhye TPP," the message says.

The state corporation clarified that the provision of external power supply is one of the key aspects of the safety of any nuclear power plant, since in case of failures with the supply of electricity from the outside, the station has only one emergency source of electrical supply - diesel generators, the service life of which is determined by fuel reserves. "Currently, electricity is supplied to the Zaporozhye NPP via two high-voltage lines from the Ukrainian side, which, as the events of recent weeks show, are regularly, and as a rule simultaneously, disconnected. Disconnection of these lines has repeatedly led to the transfer of the power supply of the Zaporozhye NPP to emergency diesel generators," the report says.

Rosatom stressed that the solution to this problem will be the restoration of a high-voltage switchgear destroyed as a result of shelling, located next to the Zaporozhye thermal power plant.
