OREANDA-NEWS The European Commission has proposed to stop buying Russian liquefied natural gas by next year, writes Politico.
"The European Commission plans to stop any purchase of Russian LNG by 2026, a year earlier than planned," the newspaper reported, citing a draft proposal for the 19th package of sanctions against Moscow.
On Monday, EC representative Olof Gill admitted that the adoption of this decision will require unanimous approval by all the countries of the union, they cannot be introduced with the support of a simple majority, as was done with fertilizers.
Other proposals suggest banning European companies from investing in Russia's special economic zones; reinsure old domestic aircraft and ships for five years after sale; to do business with ports outside the EU if they are used for arms trade or to circumvent the threshold price of G7 oil; provide services related to tourism activities in Russia.
The introduction of export controls against 45 companies that allegedly help circumvent sanctions is also being considered. According to the newspaper's source, 12 Chinese, two Thai and three Indian firms are among them.
