OREANDA-NEWS. The words of the new Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer that Vienna continues to support the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and expects it to be launched soon is the position of a sane person. On Tuesday, December 14, this was announced to Izvestia by the deputy chairman of the Federation Council committee on economic policy Ivan Abramov.

“Adequate position of a sane person. The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is beneficial to all participants in the civilized market. We have seen quite recently what the lack of long-term contracts with reliable suppliers leads to. In this sense, we have never let our partners down and delivered gas, observing all the terms of the contractual relationship, ”he said.

Nehammer announced his support for Nord Stream 2 earlier that day. The Austrian Chancellor stressed that SP-2 is an important project ensuring the security of energy supplies to the EU. According to him, any sanctions against the gas pipeline "will only harm the European Union," and it is not worth using the SP-2 as a lever of pressure on Moscow.

The day before, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that the SP-2 could not be welcomed, as it does not yet satisfy with the rules of European energy law. In an interview with Izvestia, a member of the Bundestag International Affairs Committee from the Alternative for Germany, Stefan Keuter, caught Berbock of using the SP-2 as a tool for political negotiations.
